Family Car Sent Over 120-Foot Embankment After Collision

One suspect arrested for DUI after hitting SUV

A multi-vehicle accident on eastbound I-8 has injured two children in an overturned car on the opposite side of the interstate.

At least six cars were involved in the crash in Allied Gardens, which occurred at about 10 a.m. on eastbound I-8 near Waring Rd., according to California Highway Patrol.

One suspect was arrested for potentially driving under the influence of alcohol, said CHP officer Sal Navarra.

Navarra believes the suspect was driving at least 90 miles per hour and crossed four lanes in a row before hitting an SUV with two adults and two children inside.

The impact sent the SUV down a 120-foot embankment, where it landed just a few feet away from the westbound I-8.

The two children inside the car were transported to Rady's Children Hospital with minor injuries. Navarra said the injuries are likely not life-threatening.

A witness said when he saw the car overturned, he expected the passengers to be critically injured or killed.

"It looked horrific," said witness Darrell Alan Jennings. "I'm just grateful that they're alright."

CHP authorities also say that a man and a woman were trapped in one of the cars involved in the crash.

Two individuals were transported to Sharp Memorial Hospital as well, but authorities could not confirm whether they were trapped at the time of the accident, nor could authorities say the severity of their injuries.

CHP originally reported that at least 10 vehicles were involved. They now believe four to six vehicles were involved, and the remaining cars at the scene pulled over to assist with emergency response efforts.

As of 11 a.m., the eastbound I-8 lanes were cleared of the accident.
