Fab Lab San Diego Relaunches in East Village

Community and tech industry leaders marked the relocation and relaunch of Fab Lab San Diego, which recently moved from Kearny Mesa to the new Makers Quarter mixed-use development in downtownโ€™s East Village.

Fab Labโ€™s new location is in a space at 847 14th St. Organizers said Fab Lab is a 501 (c)3 nonprofit that connects local entrepreneurs and innovators with emerging technology tools in areas including 3-D printing and manufacturing.

Fab Lab San Diego was established in 2007 as part of MITโ€™s Global Fab Lab Network, geared toward supporting research and development of digital manufacturing methods combining two- and three-dimensional fabrication technologies.

During a Feb. 4 public ceremony, San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer received a 3-D printed bust of his head created by Fab Lab, using scanners combined with laser cutters and other 3-D printing technology.

Fab Lab is among the first occupants of the $900 million Makers Quarter, a five-block mixed-use project being developed in several phases by a group that includes locally based Lankford & Associates Inc. and HP Investors LLC.

Makers Quarter recently saw the groundbreaking on a new location for Urban Discovery Academy charter school, a $10.5 million project being overseen by construction management firm KCM Group and slated for completion by July.
