1 Dead in Shooting Near Encanto Trolley Stop: SDPD

The deadly shooting happened near the CashCo Pawn Shop on Imperial Avenue, across the street from the Encanto Trolley Station

One man was killed and another was wounded after shots were fired near a pawnshop and trolley stop in San Diego's Encanto community Wednesday, police confirmed.

The deadly shooting was reported around 1:35 p.m. in front of the CashCo Pawn Shop in the 6200 block of Imperial Avenue, across the street from the Encanto Trolley Station at 62nd and Akins streets.

Police and fire crews were called to the scene to tend to two patients. Just before 2 p.m., officials confirmed the men had been taken to local hospitals, both with at least one gunshot to their upper torsos.

By 2:50 p.m., the San Diego Police Department (SDPD) confirmed a 25-year-old man had died, and said the department's homicide lieutenant would now be taking over the investigation.

The second shooting victim was listed in fair condition.

According to investigators, a blue or gray, 4-door sedan, which may have been driven by the suspect, was seen leaving the scene.

The victims' identities will not be released until police notify family.

Aerial footage showed several police cars, officers, a fire engine and an ambulance converging at the scene following the shooting. There appeared to be dozens of witnesses in the area, some speaking with investigators.

No further details, including a motive for the shooting, were immediately released.

At around 2:25 p.m., SDPD officers pulled over a vehicle at 5th Avenue and Grape Street in Bankers Hill that had been spotted leaving the scene of the shooting in Encanto and following an ambulance. When police determined those in the vehicle were a victim's family, officers escorted them to the hospital.

As of 8 p.m., no arrests had been made.

NBC 7 spoke with one witness who said she heard the gunshots ring out.

"I walked down there, I [saw] the one guy dead, with blood all over him. And the other guy suffering with blood all over him," the witness said. "I think it's absolutely horrible. It's terrible."
