Electrical Fire Closes Vons in Coronado

Fire chief still not sure what caused the fire, closing the store

An electrical fire at a Vons supermarket in Coronado forced shoppers to evacuate Wednesday morning, according to a press release from the city of Coronado. Heavy smoke filled the store and the sprinklers were activated.

Coronado and San Diego firefighters responded to an explosion behind the store on Orange Avenue at 8:19 a.m. and quickly put out the fire while ushering shoppers out of the store to safety. There were no injuries reported.

Fire Chief Jim Lydon said he still isn’t sure if a transformer outside of the store or a refrigerator motor inside the store caused the fire.

Vons remains closed due to heavy smoke and water damage. SDG&E crews turned off power in the store and are investigating the incident.
