Elderly Murder Suspect Arrested

The man who murdered 82-year-old Ralph Barrera in his downtown apartment last month has been arrested, according to the San Diego Police Homicide Unit. 25-year-old Gilbert Egurrola was arrested in Mexico Wednesday night.

On April 25, a friend stopped by to visit Barrera at his apartment in the 700 block of 'E' Street, when he walked in and found Barrera stabbed to death, said police. Further investigation revealed that Barrera had several guests over the day before and during that visit, police say 25-year-old Gilbert Egurrola stabbed Ralph Barrera to death.

Detectives obtained a warrant for Egurrola's arrest and, along with the U.S. Marshal's San Diego Fugitives Task Force and law enforcement agencies in Mexico, arrested Egurrola Wednesday night aroung 9:25 p.m. south of Tijuana. Homicide Unit detectives then took custody of him at the border and transported him to County Jail. Egurrola was booked for one count of murder.
