Pedestrian Critically Hurt in Path of Traffic

The accident happened in the 100 block of Ballantyne Street in El Cajon just before 10:30 p.m. Monday

A pedestrian was hit by a car and critically injured Monday night in El Cajon after apparently stepping into the path of oncoming traffic, police said.

The collision happened around 10:25 p.m. in the 100 block of Ballantyne Street. El Cajon Police Department (ECPD) officers said a silver Nissan Maxima was traveling north when a pedestrian stepped into the street.

The driver struck the pedestrian – an El Cajon resident – and the pedestrian suffered serious, life-threatening injuries, police said. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with officers following the crash.

The accident is under investigation, but police do not believe alcohol or speed contributed. Anyone with information on this collision should contact the ECPD at (619) 441-1632.

Police said it’s important for pedestrians to always cross the street at designated crosswalks and to wear bright, reflective clothing if walking during hours of darkness.

The victim’s name was not released.
