1 Shot Dead at El Cajon Apartment Complex

Witnesses said they heard two men arguing right before multiple shots were fired at a complex on Graves Avenue

A man was fatally shot at an apartment complex in El Cajon Wednesday night, left to die on a sidewalk, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department confirmed.

Officials have now identified the victim as Kevin McCalla, 37.

The deadly shooting happened around 8:45 p.m. at a complex at 1475 Graves Ave. When deputies arrived on scene, residents directed them to McCalla, who was lying on a pathway within the complex.

Witnesses told officials they heard two men arguing right before several shots were fired.

"It sounded like I heard a bunch of really loud fireworks going off," said neighbor Diane Pintor.

The victim was shot multiple times, including once in the stomach. Medics tried to revive the man, but he died at the scene, officials said.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing. At this point, detectives have not identified any suspects of vehicles of interest. Officials believe McCalla was a temporary resident of El Cajon, but did not release further details regarding the victim or a possible motive for the deadly shooting.

A lieutenant with the investigation said McCalla was from Jamaica and has family from the East Coast, but none in San Diego. It is unknown who he may have been living with, detectives said.
