Driver Sentenced in Cyclist's Death

Julianne Thomson pleaded guilty to gross vehicular manslaughter in the hit-and-run crash

A young Carlsbad woman was sentenced Monday to six years for striking and killing a cyclist with her car.

Arthur Jacobs, 64, of Vista, was hit by a truck July 27 on southbound El Camino Real near Cassia Road in Carlsbad.

The impact sent him flying into the bushes nearby, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses told police officers the driver involved in the crash drove away and pulled into a nearby apartment complex.

After officers investigated, they arrested a 23-year-old Julianne Thomson of Carlsbad on charges of felony hit-and-run, manslaughter, and driving while under the influence.

Thomson later pleaded guilty to gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated.

On Monday, Thomson was sentenced to six years behind bars.

In the days following the accident, Jacobs' oldest daughter Melissa Tennent said her family doesn't understand why Thomson didn't stop to help her father.  "I don't know how to describe it, I am just very angry."
