The Burn Institute issued a statement warning the public against unauthorized phone solicitors falsely claiming to be raising
money for burn-injured children.
These telemarketers are not affiliated with the Burn Institute or any other locally authorized burn support organization, according to the group's statement.
City of El Cajon spokeswoman Monica Zech said there have also been recent reports of phone solicitors asking for money on behalf of local firefighters or the California Firefighter's Association.
"These are scams as well," she said. "We never solicit donations over the telephone."
Anyone who receives such a call was encouraged to hang up and immediately report the request to the Burn Institute at (858) 541-2277.
