Dollars for Disasters

The San Diego chapter of the American Red Cross has been awarded more than $1.6 million in grants from the Akaloa Resource Foundation to better prepare for disasters.

The Red Cross says $1 million of the money will be used to start the "Prepare San Diego" initiative, an effort to help the nonprofit further plan and prepare for catastrophic events.

Under the initiative, the Red Cross will pre-position emergency supplies, upgrade response technology and continue to train hundreds of additional disaster volunteers.

A Web site, Prepare San Diego, is also being created to help educate residents in San Diego and Imperial counties on the importance of being ready for disasters, both at home and in the workplace.
