Pursuit Suspect Crashes, Injures 3 in Otay Mesa SDSO

Three people in a truck being chased by deputies were injured Monday afternoon when the driver crashed into a semi-truck in Otay Mesa.

San Diego Sheriff’s Department deputies pulled the truck over for a minor traffic violation and the driver, identified as 26-year-old Christian Eduardo Saldana Medina, was initially cooperative, deputies said.

Medina pulled over for deputies but while they were conducting records checks he sped off, according to SDSO Lt. Jason Vickery.

The pursuit began at around 2 p.m. and lasted for about a mile and a half. It ended when Medina crashed into the side of a trailer of a semi-truck on Pacific Rim Court and Camino Maquiladora, according to Lt. Vickery.

The front end and part of the truck's cabin became wedged underneath the trailer. Medina and two other passengers had to be extricated and were transported to the hospital. One of them was taken by helicopter, Vickery said.

Medina was arrested for felony evading and felony evading with injury. The second passenger, identified as Edgar Quintana Valenzuela, 38, was arrested for possession of a controlled substance and possession of paraphernalia.

The third passenger was not arrested, Vickery said.

The San Diego Police Department was called in to help close off the street in the area, deputies said.
