Two vehicles struck a pedestrian in Vista and took off before law enforcement arrived Monday, leaving the man lying in the street with fatal wounds, the San Diego County Sheriff's Department said.
The 60-year-old man was found by deputies lying in the middle of the road at the intersection of W. Vista Way and Melrose Drive, just north of state Route 78 at about 4:30 a.m.
SDSO's investigation determined the man had been struck by two vehicles, first an earlier model Dodge Ram pickup truck, which was likely damaged in the crash.
The man was then struck by a second vehicle, which did not have an available description, SDSO said, though early in their investigation deputies said a silver sedan hit the man.
Neither of the vehicles stayed at the scene.
The man was transported to Palomar Hospital where he later died from his wounds.
SDSO cordoned off a section of W. Vista Way as they investigate but lanes were reopened by about 7 a.m.
