Deadly I-8 Car Fire Sparks Small Brush Fire

A single vehicle crashed into a guardrail on westbound Interstate 8 and caught on fire, triggering a small subsequent brush fire

A vehicle hit a guardrail and caught on fire on westbound Interstate 8 Friday night, sparking a small subsequent brush fire near the Waring Road off-ramp.

According to CHP, the single-vehicle collision happened around 8:30 p.m. in the Grantville area.

There was one person in the car during the crash. CHP said witnesses tried to pull the driver out of the car but were unable to do so due to the intense flames.

The driver died at the scene, CHP confirmed.

Fire crews were able to extinguish both the car fire and small brush fire relatively quickly.

CHP provided traffic control near the accident, closing lanes on westbound I-8 and diverting traffic off the freeway at Waring Road as authorities secured and investigated the scene.

The medical examiner was requested. The victim’s name has not yet been released.

Authorities have not released any information about what may have caused the collision with the guardrail. It is unknown at this point whether speed or acohol played a role in this deadly accident.
