Cyclist Run Over by Car, Killed on Fairmount Avenue

An evening bike ride turned deadly for a man in Chollas Creek Tuesday night.

Police say the cyclist, a 66-year-old man, was riding against traffic on Fairmount Avenue, approaching 47th street, just before 7 p.m. when he possibly fell off his bike and was run over.

Investigators think he may have fallen off before being hit because there was little damage to the bicycle.

The driver, a 61-year-old woman in a Toyota Camry, told police she saw what she first thought was a shadow but couldn’t swerve out of the way in time when she realized it was a body.

Investigators are trying to figure out if the cyclist simply lost control, was under the influence, or suffered some kind of health condition.

Police are reviewing surveillance footage from cameras on an MTS bus that was behind the Camry at the time of the crash.

The driver was cooperating with police.
