Cyclist Killed by SUV Remembered

Family members of a Poway man killed while cycling along a North County bike path have released new photos in his memory.

Nick Venuto, 40, was killed when an SUV veered off State Route 56 and plowed through a fence onto the Carmel Mountain Road Bridge.

The driver of the SUV lost control while driving eastbound on the highway just after 6 p.m. June 1.

Venuto's wife Deborah and his children Nicholas and Marisa released a statement to thank everyone for their support.

"This overwhelming kindness and generosity continues to remind of how much Nick meant to everyone who knew him," the family's statement read.

Two cyclists were struck in the crash. San Diego YMCA President and CEO Baron Herdelin-Doherty, 51, of Solana Beach was transported to a nearby hospital with major injuries.

Investigators said the driver steered too hard during a lane change and lost control of the SUV.

The driver, Sheena Saranita, 27, suffered minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital, according to the CHP. Investigators said it didn't appear drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.

A viewing for Venuto is scheduled for Tuesday night at the Immaculata Parish on the USD Campus. A memorial is scheduled for Wednesday at 11 a.m. Venuto's family wants his cycling friends to wear their jerseys to the service.
