CSU Tells Its Students to Leave Japan

The California State University system is closing its programs in Japan.

Tuesday Chancellor Charles Reed sent a memorandum asking that the 22 Cal state schools stop sending students to Japan and bring back those studying in the country.

"Although some of our students are not in areas directly affected by the earthquake or the tsunami that followed, the damage to infrastructure and the resulting potential for shortages and other logistical problems are cause for concern," Reed wrote in his memo. Also cause for concern is the continuing uncertainty and increasing danger caused by damaged nuclear facilities. Leaving our students in this situation is not a risk I am willing to take."

It was unclear how many CSU students were studying abroad in Japan but Reed said his office would assist in bringing home the students.

The schools are also being asked to help Japanese international students return home.
