Cops: Road-Rager Shot 4 Times at Officer

A man is behind bars and faces attempted-murder and weapons charges after allegedly firing four shots from his car at an off-duty officer in South Bay.

Police said Lon Chay, 26. raced up north Interstate 5 behind the off-duty sergeant, who changed lanes to let the vehicle pass. The officer told investigators afterward that he then attempted to get close enough to the suspect's vehicle to get a license-plate number, believing that the driver may have been under the influence. The suspect then slammed on his brakes and fired twice at the sergeant, the officer said. As the sergeant backed off to radio in the incident, the suspect fired two more shots.

Neither the sergeant nor his vehicle was hit, nor did he return fire.

Law enforcement later found the suspect's vehicle near the intersection of at 45th and G streets in National City. Chay was taken into custody.
