Cops: ‘Big Boy Bandit' Victim of His Own Success

A man authorities believe is the Big Boy Bandit was arrested in Ocean Beach, according to San Diego police.

FBI agents and local officers took Stephen Colburn into custody on Thursday afternoon at his home on the 4900 block of Santa Monica Avenue.

FBI special agent Keith Slotter said Colburn is suspected of robbing 17 banks between 2004 and 2008. He was dubbed the Big Boy Bandit because of his large size.

Police said employees at a Mission Valley Citibank recognized the Big Boy Bandit from a recent bank robbery and locked the doors to prevent him entering the building. A witness spotted him leaving in a white Lexus and was able to provide police with a license plate number, which they used to track him to his home.

The robberies are still under investigation and anyone with information is asked to call the FBI or San Diego County Crime Stoppers.
