Cage Doesn't Stop Copper Thief

Despite Caltrans's best efforts, the landscaping pipe was pilfered

A copper thief was so focused on stealing a pipe that even a locked cage couldn’t prevent the theft.

Someone broke the lock on the cage along a San Diego area highway and pilfered a copper landscaping pipe.

Caltrans was alerted to the theft around 7 a.m. Thursday when water was reported on the road near Interstate 5 and H Street.

When crews arrived they found the cage put in place to protect the copper pipe removed.

The lock had apparently been cut.

Then, the thief took the section of copper piping that was accessible above the ground.

There are other similar cages in place along the highway but they were untouched according to Caltrans.
