Controlled Propane Burn on Naval Base Coronado Will Produce Days-Long Tower of Flames

If you see flames coming from Naval Air Station North Island on Wednesday and Thursday, don't be alarmed.

Naval Base Coronado warned San Diegans in a Facebook post this week that it would be burning vapors from an 18,000-gallon propane tank so that the tank could be removed.

The burning vapors could produce flames as high as 22 feet in the air, according to the base.

The burn will be conducted for 10 hours each day on Wednesday and Thursday.

The base said that because it is burning mostly residual vapors, there will be no significant impact on air quality.
