I'll look for any excuse to take a drive in my 1978 VW Bus. I've owned it for 27 years. Believe it or not, I found the bus at a gas station in Louisville, Kentucky. It's been a great car. I decided to take a little photo road trip from Oceanside to La Jolla on beautiful day in July. I let my bus pose in all the pictures. I hope you enjoy it. We'll start here, at the Oceanside Pier.

You can never drive along the coast without seeing someone taking their boards to the beach.

I love any pier, both on the horizon and for a stroll. To get my roof in the shot I had to stand on a small ladder.

Surf camps are going on all over San Diego in the summer. Sometimes they get in the way when you're trying to paddle out but I'm glad there are people with the patience to teach the next generation to love the water.

I've never actually ever watched "Top Gun," but the house from the movie is still there in Oceanside. Sad to see it empty and surrounded by a chain link fence.

I'm a sucker for palm trees. This is the road that drops down to the beach just south of Oceanside Pier.

There are some crazy, colorful murals in San Diego. This one is on the side of Bull Taco in Oceanside. I prefer their original location at San Elijo campground.

When you've been at the beach all day, a place like Angelo's Burgers in Oceanside is an incredible place to chow down. Nothing gourmet, but it fills you up.

The Carlsbad Power Plant can be seen up and down the coast. This picture is taken from the parking lot of Tamarac.

Everywhere you go, surfers young and old. I can only carry a long board on my head for so long before it hurts but some guys can do it all the way to their car.

Not sure why this empty lifeguard tower is sitting here. North of the campground in Carlsbad.

My favorite stop after a Saturday morning of surfing, Leucadia Donuts.

Tom and Emily, owners of Leucadia donuts, the friendliest people along the coast.

Waves are small, but it's still a beautiful day in Encinitas.

Nice reflection of the bus, this is right next door to the classic La Paloma theater in Encinitas.

Tiki sculpture at Swami's. Amazing what people can do with a power saw.

To save us from the drought, California officials decided it would be a great idea to turn off the showers at State Beaches. I'm not happy about it.

The Cardiff Kook somehow found a place in our hearts, not because we like the statue but because we like what people do to it.

Lifeguard station at Cardiff Reef. The waves have been taken over by stand-up paddle boards so I tend to stay away.

Another view from Cardiff looking toward the state campground. It's always full in the summer months.

Cardiff surfers, it's never too small to paddle out. Well, that's not exactly true.

It's a popular stop for tourists and my last stop on the road trip, the Glider Port in La Jolla. You'll never find me in one of those things, but I love to watch them sail up and down the bluffs above Blacks.
