Construction Closes SR-78 for Eight Weeks

Intermittent freeway closures will take place overnight

State Route 78 will experience intermittent nighttime closures over the next eight weeks due to a freeway construction project, an advisory from TransNet confirmed.

Work on the freeway – between Nordahl Road and Twin Oaks Valley Road – began on Monday.

For approximately the next two months, that portion of the freeway will be closed each night from 11:30 p.m. to 5 a.m. as construction crews rehabilitate a portion of SR-78 over Mission Road and finish constructing eastbound auxiliary lanes.

TransNet says motorists should avoid the area if possible during these closure periods, as traffic delays are expected. Signs along the area will direct motorists through detours.

The eastbound detour includes exiting on Barham Drive, traveling east on Mission Road and getting onto the SR-78 east on-ramp from Nordahl Road.

The westbound detour includes exiting on Nordahl Road, traveling west on Mission Road, then west on San Marcos Boulevard and getting onto the SR-78 west on-ramp from Twin Oaks Valley Road.

Meanwhile, residents and surrounding businesses should be prepared for nighttime noise caused by heavy machinery during construction.
