U.S. Customs and Border Protection Involved in Chula Vista Shooting

A woman identified by police as 32-year-old Valeria Alvarado has died in a shooting involving a member of the U.S. Customs and Border Protection in Chula Vista officials said.

The shooting happened in the middle of the street around 1 p.m. Friday in a residential area.

Officials said that border patrol agents were serving a felony warrant when an agent was assaulted by a woman driving a vehicle. The woman was not the subject of the warrant.

The agent was carried several yards on the hood of the car before he fired his weapon, said CBP Chief Patrol Agent Rodney Scott.

"The suspect was armed with a vehicle, and literally ran our agent down," said Scott.

The agent is hospitalized and there is no word on his condition.

Scott gave limited information, saying that the investigation is ongoing. There is also no word on the person intended for the warrant.

Alvarado was killed in the shooting and a dark-colored Honda Accord with bullet holes in the windshield was parked on Moss Street near Oaklawn Avenue.

Residents said they saw medics performing CPR on the woman in the street and then watched as the medics covered the woman with a tarp.

Hector Salazar was reading his mail in the home just a few feet away from the incident.

"I just saw an agent with a gun walking toward the car and yelling. But the person inside didn't respond," he said.

Two people living about a block from the scene of the shooting say they heard about five or six shots. Other residents recalled as many as eight rounds.

Marco Garcia lives on another corner of the intersection at Moss and Oaklawn. He was in the kitchen when he heard the shots and immediately told his mother to get on the ground.

When he looked out the window, he saw that the person in the dark green Honda Accord was not moving.

"I saw her arm hanging out of the side of the car" he said.

Garcia said he's seen the car in the neighborhood but did not recognize the suspect.

Eduardo Camacho, a witness, told NBC 7 that he saw a woman with several bullets in her chest and the officer was very shaken up.

"He nearly fell to his knees," Camacho said. "I saw his knees buckling. He started shaking all over."

Several U.S. Border Patrol vehicles arrived after the shooting was reported and the scene was cordoned off with crime scene tape.

Chula Vista police officers were on scene as well as Chief David Bejarano.

One woman told NBC 7 San Diego that she ran out of her house, afraid one of the many children in neighborhood may have been hurt.

A large apartment complex is located where the shooting happened and there are rows of older homes along the other side of the street located just east of Interstate 5 south of L Street.

Police said the scene should be cleared by 10 p.m.
