Chargers Trim Roster To 53

The Chargers made their final (for now, at least) roster cuts of the 2015 exhibition season. To get to their 53-man limit, the following players were let go:

  • LB Chi Chi Ariguzo (injured)
  • CB Richard Crawford
  • CB Greg Ducre
  • WR Javontee Herndon
  • G Michael Huey
  • S Johnny Lowdermilk
  • CB Jordan Mabin
  • LB Ryan Mueller
  • TE Brian Parker
  • S Adrian Phillips
  • CB Lowell Rose
  • RB Dreamius Smith
  • QB Brad Sorensen
  • DT Damien Square
  • LB Colton Underwood (injured)
  • G Kenny Wiggins

  • K Nick Novak
  • WR Austin Pettis
  • TE John Phillips

  • G Jeremiah Sirles (to Minnesota for sixth-round selection in 2016 draft)

A couple of surprises are on the list, most notably the release of kicker Nick Novak. The veteran and San Diego native has been one of the most accurate kickers in franchise history the last couple of years. He's being replaced by undrafted rookie Josh Lambo, who is long on leg strength and potential but short on experience.

The Bolts kept four running backs, as expected, one of them neon Donald Brown, who has underperformed in his year-plus with the Bolts. He does provide a solid locker room presence.

Another surprise is the trade of offensive lineman Jeremiah Sirles. An undrafted rookie from Nebraska a year ago, where he played tackle, Sirles has learned the guard position and is getting to know how to play center.

Blocking tight end John Phillips is also gone. Kyle Miller, a 2nd-year pro from Mount Union, earned a spot as a tight end.

The Chargers will now look at adding players from other teams around the NFL and try to sign 10 players to their practice squad.
