Board Rules Chargers Team Doctor Should be Reprimanded

Medical board determined that Dr. David Chao was "dishonest" and should receive a public reprimand

The California Medical Board  just released its decision regarding the punishment for the San Diego Chargers team doctor.

Dr. David Chao was accused of lying about a 2007 DUI conviction on a medical form.

Dr. Chao told the medical board last month that he was a changed man and no longer drank alcohol and got behind the wheel.

In response, the medical board on Monday said Dr Chao should receive a public reprimand and be required to take classes to maintain his medical license.

The board determined that Chao was "dishonest" when he failed to reveal his DUI conviction on applications to work as a qualified medical evaluator for workers' compensation cases.

Dr. Chao's attorney issued a statement Monday afternoon, saying, "We are pleased with Judge Johnson's decision that Dr. Chao's license remains unrestricted. This again confirms there is no issue regarding Dr. Chao's ability to provide high-quality care."

Ed. Note: A previous version of this article detailed past unrelated allegations against Dr. Chao that were unproven.
