Chargers Part Ways With Special Teams Coach

The San Diego Chargers announced on Wednesday afternoon that the team was parting ways with Special Teams Coordinator Kevin Spencer.

The team issued a very brief statement, stating that Assistant Special Teams Coach Craig Aukerman will oversee the special teams for the rest of the season in Spencer’s place.

Spencer was the special teams coach since 2013. The Chargers did not provide further details on his departure.

The Chargers are 3-8 this season and were hung up in a six-game losing streak until last Sunday when the team beat the Jacksonville Jaguars 31 to 25.

Last week, head coach Mike McCoy walked out of a news conference after a reporter asked him about his plans for the punt returner (a position overseen by the special teams coordinator).

"We'll do what we think is in the best interest of the football team,” McCoy said before walking out amid further pressing about the current starter in that position.
