Chargers Extend Melvin Ingram

Outside linebacker gets big payday

The Chargers are switching their defensive scheme to fit the preference of new defensive coordinator Gus Bradley, moving from a 3-4 front to a 4-3. That means they’ll be utilizing more guys with their hands on the ground and fewer standup edge rushers.

But it didn’t stop them from throwing a whole lot of money at Melvin Ingram.

After designating Ingram as their franchise player the Chargers worked out a 4-year contract extension worth a reported $66 million ($42 million guaranteed). After a few injury-plagued seasons Ingram stacked up 18.5 sacks the last two years.

Ingram had not been working out at organized team activities but is now expected to attend the team’s final mini-camp this week.
