Carlsbad Jogger Hit and Killed by SUV

A makeshift memorial on Monday marked the place where a 51-year-old woman was hit and killed by a SUV on Sunday morning as she was jogging with her daughter.

Nicole Lynch of Carlsbad was hit on Carlsbad Boulevard just north of Tamarack Avenue just after 7 a.m. A 52-year-old man driving a 1998 Ford Expedition collided with Lynch when he suddenly swerved onto the sidewalk for an unknown reason, Carlsbad police said.

The driver, whose name has not been released, was heading north on Carlsbad Boulevard when he struck the woman, who was jogging north on the east sidewalk, police said.

Traffic detectives are investigating what caused the crash. They say alcohol or drugs are not believed to be involved in the collision.

One nearby resident, Captain Shawn, said he woke to a loud scream and went outside to check out the commotion. He said he believed the woman was hit from behind.

Shawn said that stretch of road is dangerous and not the first time someone's been hit.

“We have a lot of patrols that sit down toward the lagoon area, but we don’t really have too much patrolling going on right here," he said. "The crosswalks they put in, to me, are a waste of money."

"We jaywalk," he added. "It's safer."

While police have not revealed any possible factors in the crash, Shawn suspects the driver was distracted.
