Caregiver Pleads Not Guilty to Oceanside Woman's Murder

A caregiver accused of abusing an Oceanside woman, resulting in her death, and also injuring her best friend has pleaded not guilty to a murder charge.

William Sutton, 66, appeared in court on Monday for his arraignment. He was ordered to be held without bail.

Margaret Wood, 94, died July 9. Wood and her best friend, 92-year-old Marian Kubic, were injured in an April 16 confrontation with Kubic's caregiver.

Surveillance video captured the incident in which Wood suffered a cracked skull and broken nose. After 11 weeks, she succumbed to her injuries, her family said.

Sutton was arrested earlier this month after investigators said he beat Wood and threw her down three porch steps outside Kubic's home.

If convicted of murder, Sutton faces a maximum sentence of 25 years to life in prison.
