Two elderly motorists were rushed to the hospital after the car they were in went over an embankment in Point Loma on Monday morning.
The car crashed at about 9:30 a.m. after going over the edge at a parking lot at Cabrillo National Monument. Maurice Luque of San Diego Fire Rescue said the vehicle went about 225 feet down the hillside before flipping and traveling another 25 feet or so and finally coming to a rest, according to Luque. The 77-year-old passenger was able to get out of the car and managed to go about 25 feet, seeking help, while his friend was still trapped in the car. Rescuers soon reached both victims and started attempts to extricate the driver. It took them nearly an hour to rescue the second man, who is 75, according to SDFR.
"According to a passenger ... his friend was driving, and his friend, he said, had a bad hip, and he mistook the gas for the break," Luque said.
Both victims were taken to USCD Medical Center. The driver had major injuries, according to Luque, and was taken by Copter 2 to the hospital. The other man suffered minor injuries, according to Luque.
