A man was found unconscious along the side of the road in the North County and investigators say it appears he was the victim of a hit and run collision.

Oceanside Police Officers were called westbound State Route 76 near N. Santa Fe Avenue after 10 p.m. Thursday.

An off-duty CHP officer told police that he saw a man sleeping in the bike lane.

It is unknown how long the pedestrian may have been laying there.

Soon police realized the man had been struck by a car.

A medical helicopter transported the victim to Scripps La Jolla Hospital where he was listed in critical condition.

Police closed the westbound SR-76 between Santa Fe and College Boulevard while they investigated.

Officers say a white Ford may have been involved in the hit-and-run collision according to evidence found at the scene.
