Brush Fire Burns More Than 100 Acres on Santa Catalina

A fire began behind the Catalina Yacht Club on Santa Catalina Island and scorched about 115 acres of brush Monday.

Containment was at 85 percent Tuesday morning. No injuries were reported and there was no damage to any structures.

The fire was reported at 2:46 p.m., said county fire Inspector Matt Levesque. Local fire crews began attacking the blaze, aided by three water-dropping helicopters. More firefighters were being dispatched to the island by barge and more by helicopter, he said.

Levesque said the fire burned close to some outbuildings and other structures, but firefighters were able to keep the flames away.

The cause of the fire was not yet known, and it was unknown how long it would take to contain the blaze.
