20-Plus In Custody After Boats Come Ashore

Two boats carrying suspected illegal immigrants came ashore within hours of each other early Tuesday. One of the boats was also loaded with drugs, according to police.

The first boat arrived on Windansea Beach in La Jolla loaded with 2 tons of marijuana packed into at least 40 bundles. Agents took at least seven people into custody who had scattered and ran through the neighborhood. In some cases, the suspects ran into people's back yards after they realizedlaw enforcement was closing in on their operation

According to San Diego police, U.S. Customs and Border protection spotted the boat around 1:15 a.m. on the shore when suspects were unloading packages.

Police believe they arrested everyone who was in the boat, thanks to the aid of a police helicopter.

A little more than an hour later, another boat came ashore just north of the pier in Ocean Beach. Initial reports said the boat carried dozens of people. Border Patrol officials said that they apprehended 13 suspected illegal immigrants near the beach.
