Borrego Springs Aquifer Draining Down At Alarming Pace

Borrego Springs is draining down its aquifer at an alarming pace, water officials say, and the Borrego Water Coalition is now taking the issue to the public.

Residents of this small community northeast of Escondido are invited to attend a public outreach meeting Thursday afternoon, starting at 4:30 p.m.  at the Borrego High School library, 2281 Diegueno Road.

The aquifer has been draining down for decades – even before the drought – but a new report warns that if nothing’s done soon, “the community could face dire consequence,” coalition officials said in a news release.

Among the topics officials want to address with residents are ways to protect the water supply for the future.

Officials warn that if nothing is done, groundwater will become more expensive, water quality will diminish and some wells could run completely dry.

Officials want to look at opportunities to reduce water use in agricultural, recreational and municipal use.
