Blaze Engulfs Rancho Penasquitos Apartment

Firefighters battled an apartment fire off Carmel Mountain Road in Rancho Penasquitos around noon Sunday. 

The fire broke out at an apartment complex located in the 14000 block of Cuca Street. When San Diego Fire-Rescue crews arrived, the apartment was fully engulfed in flames, a spokesperson said.

The fire started on the first level patio of the two-story complex. The first level is a total loss, and the second level unit sustained damage to the patio and smoke damage inside, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue.

The family who lives on the first level is made up of two adults and three kids. They will be staying with family members.

The family who resides on the second floor is made up of two adults and one child, and they will be assisted by Red Cross.

The estimated damage to the structure is approximately $100,000 plus $50,000 to the contents of the apartments.

It was not clear what sparked the blaze.

No one was injured in the fire.
