Big One Burger Challenge

If you can eat it and keep it down for 30 minutes, the meal is free

The challenge: to scarf down the "Big One Burger" at Daddy-O’s in Point Loma.

Under the diner’s rules, participants must consume a 2-pound patty that sits on a 10-inch bun in less than 45 minutes.

Guys were just mowing the restaurant’s big burgers including the MacDaddy, the Mondo and the Macho Grande like little Scooby snacks according to Daddy-O’s owner Dave Deakman.

“I wanted to come up with a big burger that would require a lot of effort to get down,” Deakman said.

NBCSanDiego brought together four participants Tuesday morning to see if the task can be accomplished.

Among them, Assistant News Director Chuck Westerheide, self-proclaimed vegetable hater, and assignment editor Jesse Garcia who skipped dinner and breakfast to prepare for the battle.

Reigning champion Peter Ruiz and speedeater Matt Cohen joined Garcia and Westerheide as they tried to finish the burger with six slices of bacon and eight American cheese slices each.

Ruiz and Cohen trained for the competition by eating iceberg lettuce and water to puff out their stomachs.

It's a good thing too because the contestants also had to finish up a shake and a basket of cheese fries.

The burgers have about 2300 calories and over 100 grams of fat each.

To compare, a McDonald's Big Mac contains 540 calories and 29 grams of fat, according to the restaurant's nutritional guide.

On the good side, there is a pound of lettuce on each burger, so at least you’ll get your veggies in.

If you can compete the burger and its sides and keep it down for 30 minutes without tossing it up, the meal is free and you'll get a handy dandy T-shirt from the restaurant.

On Tuesday morning, Ruiz, beat out the others  taking home the big prize - wait for it - a free dessert.
