A bicyclist suffered life-threatening injuries Sunday after a hit-and-run driver struck him head-on in the Park West neighborhood of San Diego.
A 44-year-old man was riding his bicycle southbound along First Avenue when a northbound driver struck him head-on near the road's intersection with Ivy Street at about 2:20 a.m., San Diego Police Department Sgt. T. Sullivan said.
The driver took off, Sullivan said.
The bicyclist received life-threatening injuries in the crash, including several brain bleeds and a broken jaw. Medics arrived and transported him to Scripps Mercy Hospital.
Cyclist Susanna Starcevic told NBC 7 with what seems like an increase in hit-and-runs, riders need to be vigilant.
“It’s a terrible thing happening more and more,” Starcevic said. “Cyclists have a responsibility too, they have to have their bikes lit up, especially at night; they need to wear helmets; they need to follow the laws as much as they can.”
No vehicle or suspect description was provided.
SDPD continues to investigate the incident.
No other information was immediately available.
