Bobby Beathard was responsible for assembling rosters that won 10 division titles, four Super Bowls, and one Ryan Leaf. Even that blemish is not enough to undo the success that is certainly Hall of Fame-worthy.
On Friday the Pro Football Hall of Fame Contributors Committee named Beathard as a finalist for the Class of 2018. Beathard will be voted on along with 17 other finalists in February and four to eight of them will be elected to the HOF.
Beathard was at least partly responsible for personnel decisions that led to the construction of the Kansas City Chiefs of the late 1960s, the two-time Super Bowl winning Miami Dolphins of the 1970’s (including the undefeated 1972 team), and the two-time Super Bowl winning Washington Redskins of the 1980’s.
He was also the General Manager of the San Diego Chargers from 1990-1999. His first Draft pick was Junior Seau and the first head coach he hired was Bobby Ross, two guys who became the cornerstone of the 1994 AFC Championship.
Beathard will need to receive 80% of the vote from the 48 members of the Selection Committee. That vote takes place the day before the Super Bowl and the full 2018 Hall of Fame class will be revealed on Saturday night, February 3.
