Whale Carcass Towed to Sea

A team is preparing to tow and sink a 67-foot fin whale Friday morning.

The whale beached itself in Point Loma earlier this week. Researches later found out it was pregnant and its deceased fetus was lying nearby the carcass.

The Virgin Oceanic team, along with researchers from Sea World and Scripps Institution of Oceanography,  will transport the whale from Mission Bay out to sea.

The team says it plans to tie the whale, tow it five miles offshore, and sink it.

Roughly 10,000 pounds of steel will be needed to sink the whale at least 2-thousand feet below the water.
