Strong Rip Currents Expected Over Holiday Weekend

A beach hazard statement has been issued for the holiday weekend along San Diego County's coastline.

As temperatures soar into the 80s and 90s, the National Weather Service has issued the warning for those headed to the beach.

Swells from the south and southwest will combine to bring larger surf and strong rip currents to the beaches, late Friday and all day Saturday.

β€œThe highest surf, and strongest rip currents, will be along Orange County and south to Carlsbad,” said NBC 7’s Meteorologist Jodi Kodesh. β€œThis will create dangerous swimming conditions, especially for inexperienced swimmers.”

Surf is expected to be 3 to 5 feet, with local sets to 6 and 7 feet.

Those visiting the beaches are asked to swim near a lifeguard, as they will know where the strong rip currents are located.

The County operates a Cool Zones program and has designated buildings as cooling centers. Visit the county's website or call 2-1-1 for a complete list of cooling zone locations including hours of operation.
