Aztecs Offense Explodes Again

SDSU basketball team runs it up against Eastern Illinois

Aztecs Huddle

In the last two years under head coach Steve Fisher the San Diego State Aztecs scored 90 points in a game twice.

In their first four games under head coach Brian Dutcher the Aztecs have already scored 90 points twice.

Welcome to the run and shoot era of SDSU hoops!

Alright that’s a little premature but there is no doubt SDSU has a better flow on offense and that was on display again Monday night in a 94-63 win over Eastern Illinois at Viejas Arena.

Four Aztecs scored in double figures, led by freshman forward Matt Mitchell. The 6-6 wing almost could not miss if he tried. Mitchell made 10 of 14 shots, including going 7-for-11 from 3-point land, to finish with 31 points. He also had six rebounds, three assists and three steals, and he only played 29 minutes.

Malik Pope, Trey Kell and Devin Watson also topped double digits. But the offensive output does not seem to have diminished what San Diego State did so well under Fisher, which is play lockdown defense. Eastern Illinois only shot 36.4% from the field and the Aztecs were only called for nine fouls in the game.

San Diego State runs its record to 3-1. They head to Fullerton on Thanksgiving Day to start the Wooden Legacy tournament against Sacramento State.
