Aztecs Lose Game, Spot in MWC Championship

SDSU drops winner take all affair to Rainbow Warriors

It's the most straightforward situation in sports:

Win and you're in.

San Diego State went to Hawai'i to play one game for the Mountain West Conference West Division championship and a spot in the conference title game at Boise St.

The Aztecs defense was good enough to win. Their offense was not. Hawai'i won 14-11 to win its first division title since joining the MWC. SDSU held a Rainbow Warriors team that was averaging 35 points a game to just a pair of touchdowns, easily their lowest scoring output of the season.

But SDSU's offense only got in the end zone once against a Hawai'i defense that was giving up 33 points a game. That came on a 5-yard TD scramble by quarterback Ryan Agnew in the 4th quarter that made it 14-11.

The Aztecs were able to drive into field goal range on their final possession but freshman kicker Matt Araiza narrowly missed a 48-yard kick that would have forced overtime. San Diego State has one more regular season game at home on Saturday, November 30 against BYU before finding out which bowl game they get to play in.
