Two people were hit and killed on the Interstate 805 Freeway in National City Sunday night, California Highway Patrol said.

The incident happened around 8:25 p.m. on the northbound I-805 freeway south of Plaza Boulevard, according to Officer Salvador Castro of the CHP. The pair were hit when they got out of their own crashed car and tried to run across the I-805, Castro said.

According to Castro, a Gray Toyota XA was involved in a non-injury crash with a white Honda Civic. The man and woman who were in the Toyota got out of the car, jumped over the center median wall and for unknown reasons attempted to run across the southbound freeway lanes, Castro said.

As the two tried tried to run across the freeway, the woman was hit by a Chevrolet Silverado, while a Mazda Sedan hit the man. Both were pronounced dead at the scene, Castro said.

Officials on Sunday had initially reported only one person died. Castro said the incident remains under investigation.

The names of those who died were not immediately released, identities are pending identification by the San Diego County Medical Examiner’s office.
