Arrests, Seizures Up Without Explanation

U.S. Customs and Border Protection report that their officers are unusually busy and they can't explain why.

More than a dozen fugitives have been arrested and hundreds of pounds of drugs were seized in a surge of illegal activity covering the past three days.

At the Interstate 8 checkpoint near Pine Valley, agents uncovered 230 pounds of marijuana in two different cars over the weekend. The bags stuff with bundles of pot were discovered hidden in the bumpers.

Both suspects arrested were U.S. citizens.

“We are always happy when we have a good weekend cause anytime we take drugs off the street is a good day for the CBP,” said spokesperson Angelica DeCima,

The six ports of entry along the U.S./Mexico border were busy this weekend according to DeCima. Especially San Ysidro she pointed out.

Border agents seized marijuana, methamphetamine, and heroin worth over a $1 million. There were over 400 cases of suspected illegal immigrants trying to get into the U.S. including people using fake documents or human smuggling. Some people were found hiding in the trunks of cars. And over a dozen people with felony warrants were arrested.

"The 14 fugitives we caught were wanted for crimes like larceny, probation violations dangerous drugs,” said DeCima.

On an average day, Customs and Border Patrol makes about five drug seizures and up to three fugitive arrests at the San Ysidro and Otay Mesa Ports of Entry.
