A suspected smuggling boat washed ashore Wednesday off the coast of Torrey Pines State Beach.
Officials with Immigration and Customs Enforcement said the 28-foot-long boat was found abandoned, floating north of lifeguard tower No. 7. Authorities said the vessel is normally used for fishing in Baja, not for long-distance travel.
Investigators believe the boat was used to smuggle illegal immigrants onto the beach. Agents gathered evidence on the beach. According to a report, they followed tracks from the bottom of the beach to the top of a cliff, but the trail went cold there.
Officials impounded the boat. No arrests have been made.
