A Growing Need

53 years of hot meals

For 53 straight years, the San Diego Rescue Mission has been able to provide a thanksgiving feast for the homeless.

350 volunteers showed up downtown on Saturday to help to provide a hot meal to 1,600 San Diego men, women and children.

“It’s just a wonderful day,” Herb Johnson, the CEO of the San Diego Rescue Mission said, “Every year we have this wonderful thanksgiving feast.”

It’s a need that is being met, but it’s growing quickly. There are now over 10,000 people homeless in the county, according to the Rescue Mission. The non-profit works year-round to get people back on their feet.

“Our primary stake in the homeless population here is long term rehab,” Johnson said, “About 85 percent of our clients are in year-long programs.”
