Zoo Begins Giant Panda Birth Watch

Bai Yun is going to have a baby panda

The staff at the San Diego Zoo has discovered a 20-year-old female panda is pregnant.

Bai Yun was given an ultrasound on Thursday, July 26 which clearly showed a panda fetus, according to zoo officials. The spine and a leg are visible and veterinarians were also able to detect the heartbeat.

Bai Yun was paired with Gao Gao, a 20-year-old, rescued, wild-born giant panda earlier this year. This pair has produced four cubs while they have lived at the San Diego Zoo.

Keepers will be watching Bai Yun closely, as her age deems this a “high-risk” pregnancy.
