A Sacramento County judge has agreed to delay a requirement that all California eighth-graders be tested in algebra.
The state Board of Education approved the mandate in July after a forceful recommendation from Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger that was opposed by California's school superintendent. The move made California the first state in the nation to require algebra at such an early level.
But the California School Boards Association and the Association of California School Administrators sued in September. They argued the decision was made hastily and without input from the public.
