Woman Leaps From Balcony, Man Cushions Fall

A woman jumped to safety from a second floor balcony after a home in the Midway District caught on fire, firefighters said.

The fire started just before 5 p.m. Sunday at a home in the 28-hundred block of Nipoma St.

Sean Keller was driving by the home just seconds after it started and shot dramatic home video of the fire.

"They gotta get this thing under control, this is nuts," Keller is heard saying on tape.

Investigators say the fire was started by either a candle or match that got to close to a blanket. The blanket, which was covering some exercise equipment,  caught on fire and trapped the woman inside the bedroom.

A man inside the home was able to run out the front door and cushioned the woman's fall as she jumped from the balcony, according to investigators.  Both made their escape before fire crews arrived.

It took crews about 20 minutes to put out the fire. The concern was that the fire would spread to nearby homes.

"The problem we had was basically because of the close proximity between two of the houses," said Battalion Chief Steve Bowlin. "We got a handle on it, so none of the houses adjacent to the structure were exposed.

Both of the people inside the home were taken to a hospital. There is no word on their injuries.

Damage to the home is estimated at more than $300,000.
