Hit and Run Suspect Caught Thanks to Citizen

Cops credit wary citizen for noticing something strange after watching the news

Thanks to a citizen who watched the news and noticed something strange, a suspect in a deadly hit and run crash was taken into custody, police said.

Alejandra Vazquez, 35, drove to her job at Moody's Lunch Service on Euclid Ave. with her mother Friday morning. As she parked her car and got out to grab something from the back seat, she was hit by a blue station wagon at about 2:15 a.m.

The driver fled the scene, going eastbound on Market St.

Vazquez suffered severe abdominal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

On Saturday a citizen noticed a damaged vehicle that matched the description at a salvage yard on Heritage Road. The license plates had been removed and keys had been left on the dashboard.

The citizen then called police, who used the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), to track down the suspect’s address.

Police arrested Bruce Hanson, 51, at his home on Republic St.

“Had it not been for the news story and the citizen watching that story on the news, we would not have been able to solve this case today,” Sgt. Steve Waldheim said.

Hanson is facing felony hit and run and felony vehicular manslaughter charges.
